I'd love to have a go in an Activa-spec Xantia, but they're hard to find. I suspect that the suspension doesn't actually make it good to drive, though, and otherwise Xantias are extremely boring by Citroen standards.

It's a big Citroën and it should drive like one too. And even though the Xantia was more conventional than it's predecessors, it was probably one of the best cars Citroën ever made.

interesting

Super impressive that the Ferrari TR is on the list. It's an old car. Not only was it built in the 80s, but I think it was an evolution of a chassis that came out in the 70s. I believe the TR was an evolution of the 512BB

Er, the Xantia's not a big Citroen. It was their midsize offering. It appears to be thoroughly dull, so if you're calling it the best Citroen ever (or one of), then I'd love to know what you're referring to.

Well, we used to own a 97 Xantia Break which used to be the family hauler and my dads daily driver. For information purposes I should point out that his job requires him to commute between some of our regions major cities, which resulted in an average yearly mileage of 50.000km over ten years. Add the family holidays which usually are in southern europe (we live in northern germany) and we were up to a total mileage of 540.000km. That trusty old Citroën did it all with a bit of regular maintenance, and with the original engine and transmission. Even when we sold it, the car was in good shape even though there was quite a lot of wear on the drivetrain, but there was no rust whatsoever (try that with a 1990s Mercedes) and no piece of interior trim had fallen off. Besides, it is a special car to me as it was the car I grew up with and that actually got me interested in cars and the mechanical magic that happens underneath where you can't see it. And playing with the hydropneumatic suspensions height settings never gets old.

Dull and bad are not the same thing. That's why I said, I'd like to find out what the Activa suspension was like to drive with, because apart from that the Xantia was pretty dull by Citroen standards* - but it was apparently a decent car, overall.

*Citroen standards generally include the hydropneumatic suspension, so this is a comparison to other Citroens more than to ordinary cars.

If I remember rightly, the Xantia was a contemporary of the XM, which I always loved the looks of:

Kinja'd!!!

And it was a replacement for the properly quirky BX:

Kinja'd!!!

Lookswise, at least, there's no comparison in my book:

Kinja'd!!!

Parkers' mini-review says much what I thought about the car. Perhaps they read/watched the same things which formed my opinion ;)

Xantia is something of an oddity. A rather forgettable ownership experience awaits those lucky enough not to suffer reliability problems. It does redeem itself with hydropneumatic suspension which gives a superb ride and there's plenty of space inside. However it doesn't have the character of Citroëns of old and will require specialist servicing to keep it on the road.

Oh, and it sounds like your dad might have been pretty lucky with the reliability of his:

http://classics.honestjohn.co.uk/reviews/citroe…

17th from bottom for reliabilty in Auto Express 2002 reader survey of 100 models. On very early Xantias, front suspension strut tops can pop through the top mountings. Citroens generally had average warranty repair costs in 2003 Warranty Direct Reliability index (index 99.84 v/s lowest 31.93).

1995-1997 petrols rated average for breakdowns and faults, poor for problems; 1995-1997 diesels rated average for breakdowns, poor for problems and faults; 1998-2000 diesels rated average for breakdowns and problems, poor for faults in 2003 Which survey.

I like to think that reliability is a relative thing. Even I admit that ours wasn't completely without issues, but does one daily drive a car for ten years and 500k if it is a complete money pit? In the end reliability depends on the owner as well.

Kinja'd!!! davedave1111 > MultiplaOrgasms
01/25/2015 at 08:41

Kinja'd!!!0

Definitely. And apart from anything else, (pretty much) all cars made today are epically reliable by 70s and early 80s standards. Unreliable used to mean things like that you'd go to start it on a cold day and it wouldn't start - even though there was nothing wrong as such.

Meanwhile cars back then were simple enough so you could easily repair them yourself, while the low tolerances in todays cars make the most minor of repairs a $500 job for a specialist dealer. Progress is a double-edged sword.

Is it because of the hydropneumatic suspension? It’s probably the lightest modern car ever produced with that suspension. Makes me wonder if more cars had it, they would perform better on the moose test.

Well it is partially. The Xantia came with the electronically controlled Hydractive II suspension found in other Citroëns as well, but the Activa trim also had a system called SC.CAR that added an additional sphere which acted as an active anti-roll bar and effectively eliminated body roll almost completely by simply increasing the spring stiffness on one side during cornering. Apparently in doing so it ruined the ride during cornering.

How bad was it? I wouldn’t mind such a system put in the average econoboxes/accords/camrys if it meant a lot better safety on highways.

Hello there,

I happen to own and drive a Xantia Activa (with the TCT petrol engine), and I would like to testify that the suspension of the car makes it actually a real pleasure to drive. It’s comfortable in normal conditions, and the SC.CAR system is completely ‘transparent’. You’re not really aware that the suspension is active, the car just naturally turns flat, without rolling over. So, it’s actually comfy in every way :)

The fun thing is, also, that it is a family car (as MultiplaOrgasms pointed out), thought I would not say dull (why dull? It’s beautiful, I think). People don’t expect this family car to be such a beast, that outperforms ‘top notch’ sport cars.

Furthermore, it’s reliable if maintained normally.

In a nut shell, I love it.
